Born Laurel Douglas, I am also known as Dr Shugarman. A working artist and physician, I have spent many years as a family practitioner and emergency room doctor, in both urban and rural settings.
Twenty years ago, however, in an old converted mansion in Austin Texas, where peacocks ambled along the banks of the river, I took my first art classes at Laguna Gloria...and knew then that this was what I wanted to do.
The practice of medicine is a very extroverted pastime and the practice of art is just the opposite....solitary, introverted and contemplative. How fortunate I am to have found this balance of vocations.
I have since completed a Certificate in Drawing and Painting at the Haliburton School for the Arts, and followed that with studies at The Toronto School of Art, the Academy of Realist Art, the studios of wonderful painters Jonathon Williams, Donna and Tom Dickson, Britt Zeist, Jane Dill and Kathy Bailey.
My first mentor and inspiration was a wonderful Canadian painter named Jean Townsend. Jean died in 2006, but had always encouraged me to go to San Miguel de Allende and join the art community there. I finally took her advice and have been going there annually for about 12 years now and many of my oil paintings reflect my Mexican experience.
My work is varied. My oils and watercolours are largely impressionist realism, and I have started producing giclee prints of some of the pieces that have proved more popular. I have been doing ink on rice paper for several years and have recently incorporated that technique into the mixed media pieces, which also combine calligraphy. I am intrigued by light, colour, and the incorporation of texture.
My goal is to find beauty and fun in the ordinary. Many of the images are available on art cards. For purchases or just to connect, please contact me directly. Thank you for visiting!
